Beers on the bar tomorrow in the brewery

We are open tomorrow, 12 til 7pm Saturday 29th November.

We’ve got Loaf & Loaded on the tasty food with their Christmas Menu

Her is the beer range, some changes may happen but we’re going to try and Keg of Imperial Stout and our new Stout Black Bauble will be on the bar.

All the usual stuff applies, we have sloped and level access but our toilet facilities may not be suitable for those less able. We are family and dog friendly, please be sure to keep both under control, ask us if those dogs need water and we’ll bring you a bowl over. We stock some lovely wines from Martinez Wines, Coke, Lemonade and some juice boxes. Cheers

Yesterday’s brew of Orange Cats IPA

We brewed our Orange Cats 5% IPA yesterday, mostly American Mosaic hops, just a hint of Waimea for the start of boil addition, and a hint of Citra to balance and round off the dry hopping.

This will be available in Cask and Keykeg in a couple of weeks.

We have Tiller Pin 4.2% in tank which will go into cask on Monday. Teuton Lager 4% is also nearly ready to keg once the Keykeg delivery arrives.

Cheers

February 2026 Collab Bar Day here with Bingley Brewery

Just a quick post to say its been quite a while since we had Bingley Brewery down at our place, it was 2022 in fact! It will be the usual opening times though guess we’ll stretch out shouting last orders a be little later 😉

Bingley will be bringing their bar and beers down to us ready for Saturday February 28th, they will be serving 5 or 6 Handpulled beers alongside our own 6 Handpulled and 4 keg beers.

Food will be from Loaf & Loaded.

Yes we know this clashes with Bradford Beer Festival but we figure there is enough diversity of customers that we’ll all make a good day of it.

The 12-ish Stouts of Christmas

We are excited to see our advert in the new CAMRA Tyke Taverner magazine, and we’ve just read the 12 Stouts of Christmas article, so what follows is the tweak we would have done to that peice.

We’ve quite a range right now!

We live a stones throw from some great breweries and the slightly wider area encompasses even more variety and choice of dark beers. We’ll do our best to give everyone a mention but do let us know if we’ve missed any gems. So, in no particular order….

  • Craven Brew Co – BAP Black Angus Porter 4.5% / VIP Victorian Imperial Porter 6.5%
  • Bridgehouse Brewery – Cherry Choc Stout 6% / Porter 4.5%
  • Goose Eye Brewery – Black Moor Mild 3.9% / Over and Stout 5.2%
  • Timothy Taylors – Landlord Dark 4.3% / Poulter’s Porter 4.8%
  • Copper Dragon – Black Gold 4%
  • Saltaire Brewery – Triple Chocolate Stout 4.8%
  • Salt Brewing / Ossett Brewery – Chocolate Caramel Brownie Stout 7.2% / Barghest Stout 4.3%
  • Ilkley Brewery – Stout Mary 4.5% / Nowt Mary 0%
  • Wharfedale Brewery – Wharfedale Porter 5%
  • Vocation Brewery – Naughty & Nice Chocolate Stout 5.9 / Red Wine Barrel Aged Plum Stout 10.7%
  • Dark Horse Brewery – Night Jar Dark Ale 4.2%
  • Bingley Brewery – Yippee Ki-Yay Choc Orange Stout 4.8% / Moo Moo Milk Stout 4.9%
  • Nightjar Brew Co – Cosmonaut Milk Stout 4.4% / Sasquatch Dark Session 3.8%
  • Wishbone Brewery – Abyss Stout 4.3% / Black Porter 6% / Blacksmith Porter 5% / T’Pol Stout 4% / Wood Aged Black Imp 10% / Barrel Aged Black Imp 10.2% / Black Bauble Stout 4.5%
  • Harrogate Brew Co – Harrogate Porter 4.8% / Kursaal Imperial Stout 8.4%

So thats 15/16 brewers of fantastic Stouts and Porters, a range of dark beers that is properly amazing and very local. The list could be even bigger so we should give further mentions to Bini Brew Co, Amity Brew Co, Quirky Ales, Roosters Brewery, Kirkstall Brewery, Northern Monk, Pig Love, Horsforth Brewery, Meanwood Brewery, Anthology Brewery, Wilde Child Brewery, Settle Brewing Co, Unbound Brewery, Little Valley Brewery who all turn out some great dark beers brewed in and around our area. Did we forget anyone? Let us know who and which beers we should add, ideally current beers in stock and available in Cask or Keg.

Please Support Local

*We will note that finding cask and keg beer range on brewery websites and even social media isn’t always that compelling for pub customers with lots focusing on the retail market for Cans & Bottles first and formost and sometimes no mention of Cask or Keg beer.

Brewed last week – Christmas Stout

Last week myself and Emma were having a week off, a lazy week and an odd night away in York, none of those fancy foreign holidays like the people with actual money have.

Rob and Paul were sorting your beer needs and we brewed our first Christmas Stout, Black Bauble is a 4.5% stout with German Carafa Special 3, Chocolate Malt, Wheat Malt, Rye Malt, Crystal 400, Maris Otter and Naked Oat Malt. hopped with British Challenger and First Gold hops with the addition of Black Treacle which comes though subtly so as not to overpower. Unfined and Vegan.

Pumpclips

We also put a lager brew in tank, this time it’s Teuton Lager 4%. Unfined and Vegan, this beer is hopped with German Tettnang hops.

Also releasing soon is our Wood Aged Black Imp 10% Imperial Stout aged in 3rd fill French Red Wine casks that previously held our Barley Wine and Old Ale, this brings more oak character to the beer and it’s tasting great.

Aged in wood between Feb and Nov this year.

Brewers: Dealing with Wholesalers, how do you do it?

There are so many bars out there that deal almost exclusively with wholesalers or larger brewers that, for small brewers like us, a huge number of venues—especially in cities—are effectively off-limits.

But imagine if every one of those bars chose to support smaller brewers directly with just one cask a week or even two casks a month. It would make a massive difference. Bars would also benefit by offering something more interesting than the same beer line-ups chosen by wholesalers based mostly on price and margin.

Right now, a lot of beer ranges look and taste the same. That doesn’t attract drinkers who like to explore local beers when they travel. As long as it’s not a complete takeover by one brewery, having a variety of local brews keeps things exciting.

You’d think that after more than 10 years, we’d have this side of things nailed down—but it’s still tricky. It often falls apart when we talk prices or try to ensure our casks come back. Though Ecasks, for example, add £9.40 per Ecask, so we’ve stopped using them.

Horsforth Brewery have been pushing for more Leeds pubs to support Leeds brewers, which seems like a complete no-brainer: locals supporting locals while keeping beer ranges fresh and interesting.

Wholesale – Here’s how the numbers work for us:
Our per-cask margin is £20. Out of that, delivery costs around £3.50–£4 per cask, and collecting empties (once they’ve been picked up by the wholesaler) costs another £3.50–£4. That’s £8 gone straight away, leaving £12 in profit, though now we dedict the Wholesaler discount of £8 to try sell the beer.

All in this usually puts us about £2 better off than using Ecasks with a £5 wholesale discount. So, if we’re lucky, we might make up to £4 per firkin.

Because the casks are ours, we do need them back. We’ve increased our cask stock so we can have more out with wholesalers for longer. Wholesalers can also choose from our full range, or we can fill to order to build up a pallet from upcoming brews.

One thing we can’t bend on: payment terms. Our cashflow can’t support more than 30 days. Payment needs to be made within 30 days of delivery—no exceptions. Those 60+ day terms some people want just aren’t fair; it’s effectively asking other small businesses to fund their debt.

So yeah—if any brewers out there want to share how they handle wholesale, drop us an email:

Black Imp Imperial Stout

We are going to be putting this in 20L Keykegs and 20L Pins this week, please shout now if you require a Pin, we already have a couple of pre-orders so we will mostly fill pins to order with only a handful of spares.

We expect it to come out nearer 10% so it will be for shorter sessions 😉

Aged in our twice filled French Red Wine barrels.

Reserve yours in the usual ways. Cheers

Guji Session IPA brewing today

We have tweaked the recipe and decided that this beer should be fined and clear for wider acceptance from drinkers. Yes, this is a bit of an oxymoron as it won’t be vegan friendly anymore, soz about that.

Guji

We’ve made the colour just a hint lighter too, look out for this soon in cask, we may fill just a handful of Keykegs too.

Cheers
