It’s that time of year again on the build up to Saltaire Festival and we’re doing a beer again for the lovely folks at YardFest. Set the date in your beer and music Diary it’s the 13th & 14th September. Dry Hopped, Unfined and Hazy, fermented with the Verdant yeast strain.

Grover
These will be going into Cask in approx 1 week’s time. Shout out now if you fancy a Bag in Box (10 or 20L).
It was April the last time we brewed Abyss Stout 4.3%, no wonder you’ve been keen to order it this week! We promise to get another lower ABV stout brewing again soon, it’ll most likely be T’Pol Stout 4%. Abyss is Unfined & Vegan.

Our Birthday beer Decade 4% went into Firkins and Pins today, the test sample has been posted away to check its Gluten Free status and we’ll have it on the brewery bar Saturday 30th August for our 10th Anniversary, 10 years of making lovely beer.

Hope to see you all here to help us celebrate 10 whole years!
Through winter when there aren’t as many flies, wasps, slugs and snails about it isn’t so bad. Casks that are sealed up after being used are great. Though the ones that aren’t sealed will fester away with all the bugs and microbes in the air to create some truly horrible dregs.
Some dirty cask dregs on our cask washer
The photo above is a tiny fraction of the disgusting slop that empties out of unsealed casks, it makes a sort of putrid bio-slime which we used to refer to as ‘Afterbirth’ not the nicest use of the word admittedly. This weeks dirty cask washing hasn’t been bad but last weeks were the exact opposite and I doubt Writer Howard Overman or Ryan Reynolds could come up with a better description than ‘it’s like slimer from Ghostbusters was eating turds while simultaneously jazzing into his own turd vomit’! The worst casks we’ve ever had back I could only describe their ‘aroma’ as Old Arse Turnip – Grim! They literally took weeks of washing and soaking to bring back to clean beer standards.
Get the picture?!
Things to seal casks up with:
Pegs and Corks – usually supplied by the bigger beer distros and brewers
Duct Tape – or any sticky tape really, stick it over the holes
Blue Roll / Paper Towels – I think we all have something similar to blue roll in the Pub and Brewery sector, ram a wad of it in the holes
Cardboard – roll it up and wedge it in the cask holes
A bit of plastic bag – Same as the cardboard, screw it up and wedge in the cask holes
All brewers thank you for sealing up their casks after use. It stops flies breeding and doesn’t stink.
We try really hard to ensure our casks are thoroughly clean and smell good, with a visual check along with a sniff test, before fresh beer is put back in them. Dirty casks are all cleaned at the end of a week, jet washed externally, rinsed and caustic washed. This helps us limit the amount of beer flies that enter the brewery and we wouldn’t want our neighbours to complain of flies etc. Then on cask filling day the casks are washed again in hot Caustic and thoroughly rinsed and checked before filling.
You lot seriously love your Dark beers, it’s not always easy to keep things in stock in the right formats, Firkins, Pins, Kegs…. Sometimes it only takes a couple of customers to put in some mega Pin orders and the stock goes!
Abyss Stout uses Charles Faram British grown Admiral hops
A simple start of boil addition of Admiral hops is all Abyss Stout needs to give balance, the blend of Extra Pale, Naked Oat malt, crystal malt, roast barley, chocolate malt and a hint of Amber malt go into making it. Plus a Chloride heavy liquor treatment for a good mouth feel.
This will be going into Firkins and Pins next week. You can order in all the usual ways. Or if you fancy Bag in box please shout now so it can be filled from tank to order.
Tiller Pin was brewed yesterday to keep stocks up.
Blonde 3.6% and Social Banter 3.8% have been casked and Social Banter Kegged today. There are pins available of both beers along with the usual Firkins.
We’ve done some subtle tweaks to Social Banter and it’s tasting great.
We will be filling our wooden firkins over the next 2-3 weeks, if you fancy a small ‘Beer from the Wood’ TTO feel free to get in touch and we’ll plan something in with you. Email info@wishbonebrewery.co.uk
Wooden Firkins
Here is our Wooden Cask Care Sheet you are agreeing to keep them safe and look after them. We would fill the woods from brews coming up to give the best range we can in a sensible timeframe.
